Speaker Interview: University of Wuppertal

Speaker Interview: University of Wuppertal

You will be speaking at the Crowded Places conference at SCTX 2019. Can you give us a brief insight into the areas you will be covering in your address?

We will present the architecture of producing safety and security at mass events in Germany. Our aim is to show potentials and challenges of inter-organizational cooperation.

The conference theme is ‘Delivering effective protective security to accessible public spaces’. What do you believe are the major challenges in providing effective security to accessible public spaces?

The spatial boundaries between accessible public spaces and commercial mass events become more and more fuzzy. This is a challenge for inter-organizational cooperation between private event companies, private safety and security services as well as public security. Recent critical incidents in Germany have shown that.

How do you think the threat landscape has evolved in recent years and in what ways, if any, do you expect it to change in the near future?

The threat landscape is very much focused on terrorism these days while “normal” disasters of technical, natural, and social origin as well as “smaller” critical incidents went a little bit out of focus.

With regards to your own address, what more can soft target and crowded places stakeholders do to better secure their sites and facilities with the current threat landscape in mind?

Soft targets and crowded places stakeholders should form a security network together with the traditional security actors. Making the hot dog stand owner aware that he or she also serves as a security sensor at the sharp end.

What can delegates expect to take away from your session?

Delegates can take away insights into a different security culture, in particular into how safety and security at mass events is organized in Germany.
